Dark Affirms

It occurs to me
The night lends hospitality
I find comfortable
Because the shadows obscure
My flaws and hard-wrought scars.
I rarely have to assume
A personality conjured up
To please those who cannot
Bear to see my actuality.
The night frees me to be –
I am home, at peace
When being is not difficult
When attributes are uncovered
So if acceptance is offered
I know the feelings are honest.
No one dares the night –
Without they search for truth.
The authenticity of love
Unencumbered by cosmetic
Pretenses painted super-large.
Yet, the night, lonely,
The present it offers each
Day fading, normalcy away.
