Redeeming Terms

Redeeming Snowflakes

I hear people bandy about terms that were once understood as definite descriptions as if those meanings no longer apply. It seems to happen more often and to ever more beautiful words.

Politicalizing or degrading language is an offense, but it is also a part of the adaptation of words to current times. It behooves us to cast back on some of the original purposes set out in our lexicon.

As children, many of us wondered at the beauty of the falling snow, and scores of us have yet to lose the fascination. The idea that each snowflake is an imprinted original with a unique design unlike any other ever released from heaven is fantastic, as is the fact that each human being is an even grander a miracle.

Today, I encourage you to celebrate who you are and what you create. Contribute something refreshingly inventive to our world. Give others an opportunity to experience creation through your perspective. You can only impact society if you take action.

We may grow older,
But if we nurture our passions
Creativity survives.

Keep farseeing eyes
An open, compassionate
Heart, be a blessing.

Communicate LOVE
In all that you undertake;
It makes trouble quake.

As a prompt: Take a word whose reputation has been sullied by offensive misuse and harken back to its origins. Create something, letting the original meaning shine. Do this in any medium that appeals to you.

I am grateful:

  1. I have to chance to express myself creatively.
  2. I am able to write.
  3. Reading is a fundamental skill I exercise regularly.
  4. My son inspired me by calling.
  5. The well we plumb to manifest art and literature in our existence never runs dry.

Changes Spark Creation

Design Your Space

I wanted to make a standing desk because I rarely sit down, that is how I lost sixty pounds, but that is another tale. I thought about putting cement blocks under the legs of the table I was using, but I thought that would look terribly unappealing. Though I have few visitors, my sense of style would have been insulted.

There were plastic file holders and other assorted important junk on this bar-like extension of counter space, I moved all of it. I cleaned the surfaces and moved the technological equipment and various desk accouterments here. There are spotlights just over this space, and the area is much brighter than where I had worked on the table.

My willingness to explore creative endeavors has increased dramatically. I have programs of which I never took advantage nor learned to use correctly; now I have begun expanding my repertoire and horizons.

I encourage you to optimize your workspace. Proper lighting is essential, it will lift your spirits and make your work much more comfortable. I did not spend anything to make the changes which I made. I merely expended some cognitive resources and some time. You can do likewise.

We often think our creativity is unaffected by outside influences, but the evidence shows that the environment can positively increase productivity.

I hope you will consider this advice, as always, take what you can use and discard the rest.

Your visits to my website are genuinely appreciated. If you have thoughts to share, please leave a comment. May all you do be blessed and may you ever be safe.

Keep Going, You Are Enough

Kieatrice Kangaroo began the new school year with the beautiful clothes her mother, Molly, had bought for her. She had an eye exam over the Summer and was fitted with glasses that made the world clear for the first time. She had new notebooks, pencils, pens, and a fascinating calculator. She had made straight A’s the year previous, and she was excited about the first day in class.

When the day came around, she dressed carefully and checked herself in the mirror, so she knew she looked alright. At the bus stop, some of the other joeys pointed at her and tittered with laughter.

She overheard one say, “Kieatrice looks like a four-eyed rat, and those clothes, I am sure they are second hand.”

Another said, “See how pointed her nose is, gotta be some rat in her ancestry.”

Kieatrice tried to hide the tears welling in her eyes, but she knew they would fall because water always runs downhill.

When the bright yellow bus pulled up most of the other joeys lined up ahead of Kieatrice, but suddenly she was pushed from behind and stumbled into someone else.

The joey turned and told her, “Don’t touch me four-eyes, I do not want your rat germs.”

The other joeys rushed past her, and she was last to board the bus.

The driver, Miss Eleanor, said, “Sweetheart, I saw what happened. You sit right here behind me. I will make sure you are safe as houses.”

Kieatrice was relieved by the driver’s kindness, she had ridden the same bus the year before. Miss Eleanor had always smiled and had a positive word for everyone.

When they arrived at school, Miss Eleanor turned to Kieatrice and said, “You can get off first, and I will talk to someone in the school. We do not tolerate bullies.”

She left the bus and scrambled across the lawn to the school. The joeys rushed past her, pointing, jeering, and laughing at her. By the time she reached the doors, she was snuffling, sobbing, trying to hide her upset.

The day was almost unbearable, with her having to sit all alone at lunch, she tried to understand what she had done. Nothing seemed to have caused all this animosity. She decided there must be something wrong with her, no other reason would suffice.

Then after lunch, her teacher, Mr. Vernly, lectured the class on bullying and opened the door to bring in a famous actress who told the students her story.

Miss Talent said, “When I was a child, joeys decided to pick on me. They shoved me, called me names, made fun of my glasses, my face, my clothes, there was nothing about me that was right according to them. I continued to study, making good grades, practicing my enunciation, entering contests, becoming the best I could be. I got contacts to replace my glasses. Even though those joeys could not see, there was greater goodness in me that their meanness could not destroy.”

When she finished talking she asked for questions, Kieatrice asked, “How did you find the strength to keep working?”

Miss Talent smiled and said, “I believed love was greater than evil and I chose to never give up. Anyone can choose their attitude despite the adversity they face, and let me tell you, love and attitude make all the difference. There are always others who support us, and we have to gather them as safety around us.”

Kieatrice said, “Thank you, I think it will all be okay. It was great you came here today.”

When she got on the bus that afternoon, she heard some negative comments about her, but Miss Eleanor allowed her to sit in the front seat and no one was brave enough to cause trouble on that bus. They whispered, but no joey laid a hand on her.

She left the bus ahead of the others, and though they made a fuss, she kept walking, not looking back. She decided that no matter what they did she would be a successful kangaroo. Life opened before her, and she chose to chase her dreams. Love would keep her, and she would never give up because she realized she was enough.

Are you brave?

DSC_0298

It takes courage to create, to engage the creative genius. One must overcome the demons of perfectionism, procrastination, and often, years of obscurity. The critics, the naysayers, the haters, they arrive in time to dampen desire.

Every work of towering imagination is a culmination of years of toil. Even when one appears to be living out an ordinary existence, work is being done to create a masterpiece. It may seem sudden, but success is not a momentary accomplishment. A lifetime of choices, effort, mistakes, and failures comes together in a triumph that may outlive its maker.

Are you brave?

Do you have what it takes to get up when the silence is deafening and try again? Can you make the sketch, layer the oils, when your heart is broken? Will you write when all the world has failed to appreciate your words? Can you pull the camera out of the bag and take the shot when all you have are neglected prints? Can you put new ingredients together once more after so often getting an unpalatable taste? Will you sing your song when you are afraid no one will applaud? Could you play your instrument when every other time you missed a crucial note?

Will you keep trying when your hope has fled, and you feel you are failing all alone?

You must! You must have the hope, will, desire, courage to keep making an effort when the effort is all you have; when defeat is sour on your tongue, and the fading light is dying. Only then, only when you have seen the death of all you believe you might do and you keep creating, just when you defeat the rejection, conquer the fear, and do it because you must, because creating is your life, only then will it happen. You will know yourself tenacious enough to capture the prize and build your dream.

Believe, love, be a blessing in the world because this broken world needs the blessing! Celebrate your gifts, your talents, your abilities, and accomplishments, even if you must celebrate alone. You are a magnificent human being capable of greatness. Should you be ignored, do not worry, your time will come. The creativity that resides within you will find a way of expression in the world that gives you meaning and aids others in their journeys.

Never, don’t you ever, give up!
