It Called For Haiku

Brown Teddy

If you have been with me awhile you know one of my favorite things to write is haiku. I will remind you that a haiku is a form of counted syllable poetry consisting of three lines that number five – seven – five syllables. In the original, haiku were usually nature poems. I have, over the years, adopted my own way of doing them, as long as the syllables add up, anything goes.

As a prompt, I recommend you write some haiku; however, you choose.

I had written two and a half dismal pages in my journal, and then on the new page, the haiku took over. As usual, everything about my mood got turned upside down. I  cannot ever remain in depression and create haiku. For me, this short form is a therapy. I do not really invite haiku, they just occur. So, enjoy.
1.
We have seen the stars,
We are the material
Making them shine bright.

2.
Nothing is beyond
Creativity’s power,
It brings life to life.

3.
You are not alone,
The universe cheers efforts
You make to succeed.

4.
When suicide seems
A viable solution,
Reach out, share your love.

5.
You! Never forget,
Life is love and love becomes
Reason and purpose.

6.
Creativity
Lodges within every soul,
Building life, a whole.

7.
It may not go right,
But failure is no reason
To desert your dreams.

8.
Just create something,
See where the making takes you,
Discover yourself.

9.
If you feel down, lost,
Grab paper and pen, see if
You find your way back.

See, there is no way to stay in the doldrums and write haiku. Try it, you will see.

So, It Is!

Life is Creativity

We do not have to be perfect. We must be willing to try, and keep trying even when we make mistakes, or fail. No great work is done without practice, and perseverance pays high dividends in skill and accomplishment. We must embrace new things and adapt ourselves to the times.

Creativity is required for all innovation and meritorious writing and art, but creativity alone does not guarantee success. Giftedness and talent are helpful, but skill derived from hours spent in work and exploration are what bring shine to our endowments.

Everyone is creative, but not everyone will expend the effort to find out what lies within them. Creation is ongoing, one does not suddenly arrive at the pinnacle, there is always a further level to achieve.

Learning is a lifelong pursuit, and once that hunger ebbs, one is destined to regress. Read widely, not only for enjoyment, but to learn how language works, and how those who are preeminent in the publishing world cast their words. Create a voice, but attune ears to finding better phrasing. Study methods of whatever arts pursued, continually improve technique. Find tools that enhance the work done. Embrace change, for change and love, is fundamental to creativity. Without passion, little of lasting brilliance is made.

Invest time in those things that add creative joy and multiply achievement. We know these things, but when chasing a livelihood; sometimes we lose sight of what enables our best, and we should always strive for better today than we were yesterday. Comparing ourselves to others causes us to feel weak and incompetent, we are not; if we make ourselves the benchmark, we more likely stave off depression and self-doubt.

Remember, what we are doing today would have been beyond our powers in the past. We grow, our creativity enlarges our competence; and fills our hearts and souls with joy.

As a prompt: Try something new, if you usually use technology, instead engage in work with your hands and vice-versa. If you are a writer do something artistic, an artist expand your thought in writing.

No one can complain
We have failed when we have made
Progress toward growth.

Redeeming Terms

Redeeming Snowflakes

I hear people bandy about terms that were once understood as definite descriptions as if those meanings no longer apply. It seems to happen more often and to ever more beautiful words.

Politicalizing or degrading language is an offense, but it is also a part of the adaptation of words to current times. It behooves us to cast back on some of the original purposes set out in our lexicon.

As children, many of us wondered at the beauty of the falling snow, and scores of us have yet to lose the fascination. The idea that each snowflake is an imprinted original with a unique design unlike any other ever released from heaven is fantastic, as is the fact that each human being is an even grander a miracle.

Today, I encourage you to celebrate who you are and what you create. Contribute something refreshingly inventive to our world. Give others an opportunity to experience creation through your perspective. You can only impact society if you take action.

We may grow older,
But if we nurture our passions
Creativity survives.

Keep farseeing eyes
An open, compassionate
Heart, be a blessing.

Communicate LOVE
In all that you undertake;
It makes trouble quake.

As a prompt: Take a word whose reputation has been sullied by offensive misuse and harken back to its origins. Create something, letting the original meaning shine. Do this in any medium that appeals to you.

I am grateful:

  1. I have to chance to express myself creatively.
  2. I am able to write.
  3. Reading is a fundamental skill I exercise regularly.
  4. My son inspired me by calling.
  5. The well we plumb to manifest art and literature in our existence never runs dry.

I am totally messed up! Really?

You alone are you, and you are enough. There is no need to hide who you are nor strive for unachievable perfection. You are adequate in all your ways. You be you and let the world think what it will, for you transcend the world. You are magnificent and whole. Be yourself. Believe in yourself. Use your creativity to outshine the stars, realize yourself more fully than yesterday, and build your dreams. Treasure your ideas and be uniquely and entirely genuine. Do not fear! There is no need to worry! Your journey will carry you where you belong. Trust that even in the darkest hour you are being led into your good.

Advice to a friend, I share with my friends…

You cannot give up, you have family and friends who love you more than they could ever express. You have survived and thrived in situations people cannot even imagine, you are as strong as most and stronger than the rest. You are vibrant, generous, friendly, loving, lovable, funny, kind, beautiful, and good; the world needs you and more like you. Believe in yourself, believe you are Beloved, remember the Lord is with you, and Never, Don’t You Ever, Give Up!

We Are So Much More

Growing wild in a world
Where trials seem like mountains,
And temptations insurmountable;
There is hope because we surely know
God loves us more than any creation,
And made us with greater love,
But look, see, even the weeds are beautiful.

Do not doubt your worth,
Do not hold down your head,
Do not tell yourself you are less
Than enough; you are purposed
For this time and place, a chosen one,
A Child of Most High God,
He gave you life, He builds your hope,
He knows your pain, He supplies fresh joy.

Every day you are given
Is a chance to enact agape goodness
To those traveling the same realms.
Lift up your face, set your shoulders,
Lighten your voice, settle your smile,
Claim your place as one blessed,
One Beloved, given to share Love.

I am grateful:

  1. Even in my darkest times, I am given positive words to share.
  2. Things are no worse than they are.
  3. Libraries are bastions of knowledge.
  4. I live in the hope of the resurrection, believing there is more than this life.
  5. My dog, Hope is still with me.
  6. I renamed Ko-Ko as Tribble.
  7. There are always little things to bring smiles and satisfaction.

As a prompt: Consider the weeds, write or create what you will.

My Critic Delayed This

#2018-05-04 Face Your Fear

I tell you all to create; that you are creative. I did the above on May 4, my critic said I could not post it. It was not good enough, it was a dumb idea, poorly executed. It is true, I used to do better. My critic stopped my art.

I want you to know, that critic in your head when it tells you negative things before you even begin, and when you have made something, it is a liar. I like that song, “Fear is a Liar.” Look it up, and listen.

Face your fear, do not let it stop you from helping change the world. Your creativity is desperately needed. If you know, something is not all you want it to be, practice. No one became a master at anything without trying, mistakes, and continued training (self-teaching).

No matter what your mind, another human, a boss, a parent, a teacher tells you; if there is an attempt to stop your hopes and dreams, the advice is false, a lie. You are endowed with creativity and greatness. Let no one, and nothing convince you differently.

I fight this. Fear is a problem. We have to have the courage to be ourselves in a world where many follow the crowd. We are originals, all of us are unique, blessed with different vision, dreams, talents, gifts, and abilities. If we expect the world to be better, we must make it.

Prompt: Create something you have been considering, but your critic blew you off. All of us have something like that, I know you do.

I am grateful:

  1. I slept good Thursday.
  2. I have my new friends from Nigeria, they call me, it is so awesome.
  3. Ham sandwiches.
  4. Animal crackers.
  5. Heritage Baptist Church, Douglasville, Georgia.

Speak no invective
To any living creature;
Our Judge knows each one.

Mother’s Day Without

It has not been a year,
But your absence is a void
I will never fill;
The love you gave
There is none other
Could replace its totality.

I try to forgive
The fact I did
Not appreciate you
Nearly enough;
I find no absolution,
No mending the pain.

The tears come less
Often like a deluge,
I am trying to build
A life I can inhabit,
But there is no
Denying the missing pieces.

I realize you would advise,
Be strong, happy, active,
Continue to create,
But Mama it is hard
Without your love, hugs,
Presence when I am weak.

I miss you like
The waves would the shore,
The stones would the earth,
The sun would the sky,
The moon would the night,
Without you, I am almost undone.

Yet, now, writing this
I know you know
All the things I cannot,
Will not say and you love me,
You always have, always will,
And I will see you again someday.

So thank you, Mama,
For giving me this life,
Believing in me,
Always loving me.
I will continue, I will succeed,
I will be who you thought I could be.
