Why Insomnia

Hypnos was controller of none of the humans in 2020, the powers above his pay grade had relieved him of that luxury; still, he could disturb their reality. All the distractions vying for attention drove many people to the brink of exhaustion. With his experience in sleep’s theater, Hypnos could easily reach those minds open to predation.

The wily god liked ending sleep only barely begun. On one human subject, he played the game to allow an hour, or three, of rest and arranging something to incite wakefulness. At times it was streaming a louder song, having the dog jump on the bed, changing the room’s temperature, or sending a frightful nightmare.

For another victim, Hypnos reckoned sleeping day hours and wakeful all through the night would be splendid and cause eventual dissolution. A satisfying state of affairs for his purposes.

Humans were oblivious to Hypnos’ interference. The old tales were rarely told, and so their memories were incomplete. His path was without obstacle. People who thought they slept well were providing him with a smorgasbord of dreams. He swallowed their strength.

Alex and I talked about sleep problems and this came up. I think I might do more with it, but I never know.

Sound Enthused

Music is a straight-up
Drug with intoxicating
Emotional reach
Highly motivational
Potentially erotic.
The magic extends
Upon the open airwaves
Convincing people
Belonging is a birthright
Which is forever present.
Love arrives in tones
Familiar as breathless sighs,
Ebon lashes of closed eyes,
Harmony convinces these
Are uncommon mystery.
Melody does not
Shout anyone’s name and still
Far-reaching it grabs
Hearts it touches all the same,
Captive but free, each remains.
All are apt contained
Within the magic wrought frame
Of clef, note, staff, word,
Carried farther than ever,
Lyrics often repeated.
Voices, instruments –
Delight, enhance, entrance while
None ever wanders
Long from transporting power
Of songs become legacy.

This picture was taken at the Georgia Aquarium. It is currently my desktop background.

If music became
A picture, truth it might find,
In nature, sublime.

Make your days count for something, or you may find you only wasted time.

Will Strives

We were trying to
Find our way back to normal
When we realized,
Normal was a place never
Seen in ordinary days.
See,
Things always veered
From high to low, in between,
We were never sure
What our day would deliver,
Even
The weather shuffled cards.
We learned promises
Were often kept with less stress
When we invested
Belief and trust in those who
Knew
Exact expectations.
Resolutions made
Were to love like tomorrow
Might not come, share what
We had, as best as we could,
Work
Better than yesterday.
Our futures may dawn
In measure, outside control,
But faith meets each day
Knowing the present moment
Will
Bloom as sunshine or rain.
There are only uncertainties;
We will shout for victories,
Buckle down in pain,
Tackle opportunities
Winning over and again.

Tanka and Haiku (Again)

Balancing Heaven,
Earth with kindness, love, prayer,
Know God’s blessings
Graciously bestowed upon
Us will always continue.

*****

Life is a blessing
Given every one of us
To cultivate love
Filtered by grace into each
Situation we may face.

*****

Music is living
The everyday, everything,
Holding loving hearts.

*****

Love is a challenge
We take eyes open, minds full,
Giving all we have.

*****

You are giving me
The heart to face life again,
A swan on water.

*****

Most believe life flows,
Wherever it must take us,
A breeze through treetops.

*****

When hope becomes all
You possess, nothing real much
Matters anymore.

*****

Extraordinary –
Alone, is a desert wasteland,
With you, a garden
Bountiful, delightful, lush,
We find ourselves, then others.

*****

I hope creation is going well for all of you. May you be blessed with inspiration.

Love Treads Sprightly

While you are standing
Here, still, waiting, the timing
To move on along,
Remember silence can be
A gift, revelatory.

Listen now closely
You may hear the bright ringing
Of sweet golden bells
In the distance of your life;
You can catch them if you try.

Gifts unforgotten
Lie outside, and you shall reach
Those places where all
Belonging to you comes clear;
Like a sunrise over waves.

No movement required
To recognize what blesses you:
Love warming your heart,
Someone precious holding hands
When you need more strength to stand.

The shadow may hang
Over a day, week, month, year,
But it goes away
When you realize love’s power
Holds you complete, safe, secure.

The art of loving
Is the most fantastic gift
Given you to share
In relationships discovered
Throughout every stage of living.

Once you become friends
With the idea of loving people,
Much misunderstood,
Fades like storm clouds cleared away,
Leaving happiness behind.

Love is the common
Respect accorded people
Well met every day
Plus all the ones who become
Close, dear, and so important.

Create joy, give love,
Find the purpose for which you
Were put on the Earth,
You know life is sweeter when
Shared among family, friends.

That photo is straight from my SD card, no Photoshop.

As a prompt: If you are still isolated or not, take a few minutes to think about how you can use downtime to your advantage. Perhaps you might tune in to those you have in proximity, or create, or learn, or explore what you so well know. Once you have an idea, create something. Art, writing, score, poetry, photography, cakes… whatever, do it, make the moment your moment. Own who you are.
