Seven haiku

DSC_0020

Haiku is a form of play, just something enjoyable to pass the time, especially for an insomniac. This is a crop from wee hours.

I.
From the beginning
Your sweet smile could rock the world
Outshining the stars.

II.
Power is not best
Used to beat down people’s lives,
But to raise them up.

III.
Kind words are a balm
Angry ones stir up rancor
Causing faults that break.

IV.
When joined together
Even tiny efforts can
A difference make.

V.
Given a puppy
A person learns love’s real worth
Finds true compassion.

VI.
All cats may possess
Nine lives, but eight are spent in
Trying owners’ souls.

VII.
Given words, wordsmiths
May spin an arc to span worlds,
Creating hope, dreams.

Now it is time to try this, remember the lines count 5-7-5 syllables. Just let the mind wander and feed the words it wishes. It is not hard. Pretend it is something done forever and maybe it will be easier.

Musing

2017-09-09 Replenished

This is a free but somewhat formed poem created this morning on a 6×6 sheet of decorated paper that can be purchased in a slab from various craft stores. The marker is a brown Tombow, but it really cannot be distinguished from the scan.

It is always good to try different materials in our work. Sometimes it scales things in a way that challenges us to be more creative. Using handwriting brings a direct connection to the work that can seem lacking on an electronic device. Experimentation is a great way to open the mind to new ideas.

Everything in our environment has a creative purpose if we search it out. Thinking of ourselves as a genius writers, artists, photographers, musicians, or workers in any other discipline and doing what we would if we were getting paid as we probably desire creates a sense of esteem and clarity. What projects would we choose? What would we try that we have been afraid to do thus far? When would we work? How would we play? As much as possible we should make these things a part of our lives in the present. We do not have time to wait to begin living a life we love. We have all the elements of success in us right now. We must be that person as much as we can. Believe, and likely it will be received. Life gives us what we have already claimed.

Every moment of our lives is a creative opportunity, sometimes it happens haphazardly, knocking us from routine. We should welcome the impulse and give ourselves to it. We only have this life, and it speeds away from us every moment, so we are called to make the best of time, creating beauty to enrich the world.

As a quick prompt imagine yourself vacationing on a cruise ship and meeting someone you immediately like so much that you make something to give to them before you separate at the upcoming port. Have fun and surprise yourself.

Emigre

DSC_0069

Hidden beneath such
A blanket of stars until
I was uncovered
And made to stand quite alone
Naked before an inquest
That tested all my limits
But still failed to define me.

I rest in rivers
Of unrealized splendor
Carrying no name
But that given to strangers
Who have few real possessions
Just remains of flesh and blood
Clothing bones soaked in fear.

I lost my last home
The world despises my face
For hungry eyes see
The wrong for which there can be
No justification, no
Pacifying, setting right,
I am cast outside of sight.

I am you, and you,
The blood flowing through our veins
Is the same, alike.
Though without country, this world
Accepts my pain, holding tight.
Someday, somewhere, will happen
My wayward soul shall take flight.

Beyond the horizon
Where originates all life
I will be welcome;
My time will become timeless,
I will wear a gown, pure white,
No pain will further follow,
No tears will track down my cheeks.

Meeting the Master
Will be my greatest delight,
I will then know peace,
Suffering will fall away
A home eternal will be
Finally given to me
No longer scorned, emigre.

The local library, a crucial resource

DSC_0627

In the quest to nurture our creativity the local library is one of the best places to begin. A library is a shrine to the expression of creative ideas. We can find the most current material or work which has come down through the centuries. All of it produced by humans similar to ourselves, giving us reassurance that our work can become a legacy shared through time and space. The greatest way to become immortal and affect history is to create something lasting.

Most libraries today are multimedia delights. These bastions of knowledge and entertainment contain books, eBooks, audiobooks, recordings, film, music, artwork to carry home and display for some time, computers for public use, Wi-Fi to connect our personal devices, and even more. Libraries are almost limitless with their ability to procure materials beyond their scope through an inter-library loan. Often talented community volunteers offer classes which teach new skills. Some workshops are also available at modest cost.

Librarians are a resource that our technology cannot rival. These specially trained, often highly educated, gatekeepers of the treasures we desire can provide and suggest materials with a  personal touch that no machine can match. They are well familiar with the assets within their domain, and they have the expertise to recommend interesting resources or quickly find whatever we need to locate. Love your librarians, if you can make friends with them.

The best advantage of a library is all it has to offer is ours to access without cost, absolutely free. There is no better deal on earth and should you not have a library card, make it a priority to get one.

Be advised libraries are places where one can while away a substantial amount of time, so plan accordingly.
