I was sitting in A swamp turned out and over, Lightning crashed, hard down, I was almost forever drown Tears were overcoming me; Then a cry arose Clarion against my foes, Sounding like a rose Banner wrapping me within Telling me begin again. Never forsaken – Come now, new heart, awaken To a ground safe, firm, Rock, I may stand complete on The Beloved beckons, come. Treasure hidden bright Revealed in Love’s sterling Light Abandon the night Day brilliant invites delight Heed the sweetest voice calling – Redemption, mercy, Abounding, amazing grace, Sudden about-face Into arms held wholly wide, All fear spirited aside. Severe hurt confide Those things hidden inside Pain, deep oxidized, No more jeopardy – set free, Found, restored, life’s sanctity.
This novel… We’ve been writing Over these many years, It seems maybe more like A collection Of disparate stories, Playing a soundtrack Yours and mine – The music, Not the voice, We just hit a groove Wicked and smooth, Winning – Ah, loose like tigers Jungle bait, Antelopes far-fetched, Can you make The lesson Stick like darts On the dress, never Worn, given out With drinks Not ours to consume. Still, I know, Some assume, Illusions dispelled Yet and soon, Together forever In miles set apart Known, each And ever By heart.
The timeless appeal Of bottomless foundations Leave one another To dredge rivers of hope, need, But still coming between – greed. Advantage follows The stronger needing duties Performed with slim thanks Not often heeding complaints, Or recognizing stolen dreams. The ages roll, roles Still favor some, limit others, There is no parity Equality, an ugly myth Blinding many to problems. If one stands up, out, It may not mean advancement The ceiling rises The walls grow ever thicker But it is not done, over, Time will see the flight The scaling of every height So run, run well, catch the light, Winning brings freedom and delight.
I read an article in American Scholar that inspired this poem. I also picked the word bottomless from a vocabulary list.
